Best Way to Clean Windows and Mirrors
Child’s handprints, dog’s nose prints, general dust, and grime that collects every few days—no matter how often you clean, your windows and mirrors are always dirty for a myriad of reasons. Using store-bought glass cleaner and paper towels to clean up trash can leave streaks and lint that can make you worse off than you were before cleaning.
Don’t worry; we have solutions for all your glass cleaning challenges. Our 5 tips will blow your mind for having windows that sparkle in the sun and mirrors that are clear enough to always look your best. The first step is to use our formula to create a cleaner that’s stronger than anything you’ve spent your money on.
1: Avoid direct sunlight

Regardless of which supplies you use, never clean windows in direct sunlight or when there is warm, dry wind. While you may be eager to see sunlight streaming in through your newly opened crystal-clear window, if the glass overheats while the window is wet, it will dry out the cleaner before you have a chance to wipe the window clean. You’ll be left with spots, streaks, and films — not to mention a lot of grime you’ll want to remove in the first place.

2: Use an eraser

Did your teacher ask you to stay after school to dust the blackboard? For young children, it is an honor to be assigned this task. For older children, this is often the punishment for misbehavior in the classroom.
Now that you’re an adult, one of those vintage chalkboard erasers might once again make you proud as you look out your crystal clear window. After washing and drying the windows with newspaper or coffee filters (see the previous tip), wipe the windows with a clean, dry chalkboard to remove any streaks and give them a diamond-like shine.
3: Use a paper coffee filter

A more modern alternative to using newspapers to clean mirrors or windows (just as convenient, cheap, and lint-free) is to use a paper coffee filter. that’s right. They’re cheap (so you can buy an extra pack without having to give up your morning Java glass), and they’re so absorbent that they won’t give your windows a furry coat — or ink stains like newspaper hold your hand.
Do the same with newspaper: Dip the filter in a bucket of homemade cleaner while wearing rubber or vinyl gloves, wipe down the window, then dry the window with a new filter drier.

4: Get some newspapers

When it’s time to clean your windows, spray them with homemade glass cleaner (see recipe above) and dry them with crumpled newspaper to turn unsightly streaks, smudges, and lint into yesterday’s news.
Using newsprint instead of rags or paper towels will get your hands dirty, but your windows will sparkle and won’t lint — cheap and streak-free. You can also dip crumpled newspaper directly into a bucket of homemade cleaner while wearing rubber or vinyl gloves, wipe the glass with wet newspaper, and finally dry and polish the windows with dry newspaper.
5: Do your own cleaning

Don’t waste your money on expensive commercial glass cleaners, as you can easily get a standard and efficient glass cleaner at home for very little. The next time you run out of store-bought cleaners, rinse the spray bottle thoroughly and follow our formula for cleaning windows (and glass, glass panels on furniture, etc.) that are clean. Required.
Mix 2 tablespoons ammonia, 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol, and 1/4 teaspoon mild, non-bacterial dishwashing liquid. Use a chimney to pour the mixture into the recycling spray bottle. Then spray it on windows like a commercial glass cleaner, and clean.

FAQs
Why does newspaper clean glass so well?
Newsprint’s high absorbency may be why it’s so effective at cleaning windows. It absorbs the liquid instead of just pushing it. Glass is a smooth, non-porous surface, so the ink doesn’t stick to it like a wooden mold.
What is a good homemade window cleaner?
In a spray bottle, combine 1/4 cup white vinegar with 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap. Dilute the solution with two cups of water, then shake the bottle vigorously to mix the ingredients. If you don’t happen to have white vinegar on hand, note that you can substitute lemon juice.
Does Windex work with mirrors?
The safest mirror cleaner is clean warm water-dampened with a soft cloth. An approved glass cleaner such as Windex or similar can be used. However, be very careful not to let the edges of the mirror get wet or stay wet for a while.
How can I get a free smear window?
Mix one part distilled vinegar to 10 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Before spraying the solution, wipe the window with a soft, clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or paper towel to remove dust, then spray the entire surface.
What is the best way to clean mirrors?
Mix one cup of water, one cup of vinegar, and one teaspoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Shake gently to mix. Apply the solution directly to the mirror and let it sit for a few seconds. Wipe the spray off the mirror with a microfiber cloth or newspaper.
